New to scentwork? This is the course for you. Learn how to read your dog and teach them to seek out their first odour – Cedar oil. A good Imprinting foundation will set you up well for the rest of your scentwork journey.
Suitable for all those who want to compete in SSANZ trials, Dogs NZ trials, or just scent for fun.
Course includes:
- 5 x 1 hour training sessions
- 4 x weekday evenings 6.30-7.30pm, 1 x weekend session

The sport of Scentwork is based on the work of search and detection dogs. It is becoming a very popular sport in NZ. It is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs to use their strongest natural sense - their nose, in a fun and engaging way. It requires the dog to find the source of an odour and communicate this to the handler, so it relies on a strong bond of trust between dog and handler.
In the Imprinting course we focus on teaching the handler learning to "read" their dog and the dog to recognise the target odour (cedar oil) and let the handler know where the source is.
You will receive an email with confirmation of dates, times, locations and what to bring before the course starts.
Once you finish Scent Imprinting, the next step is Scent Team Synergy.
Please note: classes will not run with fewer than 4 people.

I can’t rave enough about this class and the Dogs First team. The class was so well organised and run. Attended this class with our reactive dog and the team accommodated us with so much care and consideration that it blew me away. Such a welcoming environment and Sheelah has such a skill for teaching. I have gone on to attend other Dogs First scent classes after this one and am also currently doing imprinting with our second dog. Absolutely love it!
