The sport of Scentwork is based on the work of search and detection dogs. It is becoming a very popular sport in NZ. It is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs to use their strongest natural sense - their nose, in a fun and engaging way. It requires the dog to find the source of an odour and communicate this to the handler, so it relies on a strong bond of trust between dog and handler.
In the Imprinting course we focus on teaching the handler learning to "read" their dog and the dog  to recognise the target odour (cedar oil) and let the handler know where the source is.
You will receive an email with confirmation of dates, times, locations and what to bring before the course starts.
Once you finish Scent Imprinting, the next step is Scent Team Synergy.
Please note: classes will not run with fewer than 4 people.

Q & A

Elizabeth –
Thank you so much for the information and so much fun on the course. Willow and I had a blast. It was such a ‘non threatening’ environment and great to be able to learn a completely new concept. We will keep practising – Willow will make sure of that !!
Briar Paterson –
I can’t rave enough about this class and the Dogs First team. The class was so well organised and run. Attended this class with our reactive dog and the team accommodated us with so much care and consideration that it blew me away. Such a welcoming environment and Sheelah has such a skill for teaching. I have gone on to attend other Dogs First scent classes after this one and am also currently doing imprinting with our second dog. Absolutely love it!
Kim Lusby –
I first heard of ‘scent work’ about 18 months ago … my best friend suggested it may be good for my spaniel’s brain (as exercise was never quite enough to fulfil him!)
It’s important to note that I had never done ANY form of dog sports, and had no knowledge of the ‘dog world’. So, it was very daunting (to say the least) when we first arrived for our first training session.
Here, there were handlers with many years of experience within the dog world, and many like me, where everything brand new! We were made to feel at ease so quickly by the amazing instructors.
Fast forward 18 months, and I have gone down the ‘scent’ rabbit hole (which I, nor did my friends/family, expect!). Because of scent work, the connection between my dog and me is now unbreakable.
If you’re looking for a way to fulfil your dog’s needs and be part of a real team, meet amazing people who love dogs as much as you do, with the backing and support of an amazing, knowledgeable, and passionate team at Dogs First. If you want the best for your dog, reach out to the amazing Dogs First team. You’ll never regret it!
